THE HÄAGEN-DAZS BRAND AND EXPERIENCE PROJECT.COM HELP THE HONEY BEES

Who: The Häagen-Dazs® brand, which is licensed to Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, Inc., a market leader in frozen dessert products, and www.ExperienceProject.com (EP), the worlds largest online forum for connecting and sharing life experiences.

What: Häagen-Dazs and EP have teamed up to motivate the public to get involved in actively helping save honey bee colonies. Honey bee pollination is directly responsible for the production of over one-third of our nations food supply. Over the last three years, more than one-third of honey bee colonies have died due to a mysterious phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), posing a serious risk to both food supplies and global economies. In cases of CCD, honey bees mysteriously leave their hives and die yet scientists still dont know exactly why.

This campaign harnesses the power of social networking not only to educate the public on why honey bee pollination is so vital to our society, but also to take tangible steps to help the situation. Unique from traditional social media campaigns, critical aspects of the partnership include recruiting people into individual challenges, such as planting flowers or eating naturally for a week, and playing trivia games that earn donations towards honey bee research. While headquartered at www.ExperienceProject.com, the campaign is tightly integrated with other social media applications, such as Facebook and Twitter.

The specific challenges include:

Plant a Flower, Help a Honey Bee Challenge
Since flowers are the primary food source for honey bees, this challenge encourages individuals to help out by planting more flowers and fruits wherever they are. Participants upload photos of themselves planting flowers via Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr. The three best photos, as judged by all of the participants, will win certificates for a years supply of Häagen-Dazs ice cream.

7-Day Go Natural Challenge
This challenge encourages individuals to eat and live naturally for seven straight days. Participants learn about the honey bees contributions to our natural food sources while also earning coupons for Häagen-Dazs products and the chance to win a years supply of ice cream.

Help The Honey Bees Trivia Game
Help the honey bees with just a click of the mouse! As a key part of the campaign, EP will be hosting a special general knowledge trivia game where participants earn nectar points for each correct answer. The accumulated points will then be converted into donations in support of scientific research to help find the causes and solutions for CCD.

When: The campaign begins August 4, 2009 and goes through September 28, 2009.

Our hour of Earth Hour

We celebrated Earth Hour again this year and had a new twist on our hide-and-seek in the dark game. This year we decided to play a scavenger hunt in the dark. You had clues on one piece of paper that got you started then you had to figure out the clue and go find the next clue. Whoever finished the scavenger hunt first, of course won. Skylar loved it.

Do you live in New York or have friends there? Then, this action alert is for you!

As a consumer, you have a right to know what's in the products you use when you wash your dishes, do your laundry, or clean your home.

But did you know...

A chemical commonly found in glass cleaners is associated with nerve damage

Other chemicals found in detergents, disinfectants, stain removers, and floor cleaners can disrupt human hormones

Since 1976, New York State law requires household cleaning product makers to report chemicals contained in their products and the associated health hazards to the state

This law has NEVER BEEN ENFORCED!

Womens' Voices of Earth has teamed up with Earthjustice to make sure this law is enforced. If you live in NY, we need you -- and your NY friends, neighbors, and any other New Yorker -- to tell the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to enforce this law.

Earthjustice attorneys have put manufacturers on notice, informing household cleaner giants like Colgate-Palmolive, S. C. Johnson & Son, and Procter & Gamble that they are in violation of New York's law.

But many manufacturers are stalling, declaring that they won't file their reports until the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) tells them to do so.

Don't live in NY? Know someone who does? Please tell a friend, family member, or colleague who lives in New York State to take action!

With your help, we can dust off this long-ignored statute and get consumers the information they need to protect themselves and their families.

If anyone is a "tree-hugger" like me then FYI: Tomorrow is Earth Hour. March 29th that is. At 8:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. you shut your power off completely for the whole hour. And even if the entire hour can't be achieved, shut it down for at least 30 minutes.

In our house we have an Earth Hour party. You do food such as fresh snap peas and ranch dressing, fondue with a candle underneath. And we try to keep the food and drinks selection to where nothing electric will have to be used. My husband loves it because he says, nothing beats a cooler full of beer. Candles, indoor lanterns are some more ideas. We will make a whole night of it in the dark for Mother Earth. I have even found all-natural bamboo blankets and hemp-made sleeping bags online. Here are some more ideas on what you can do during this hour.
